Call for interview questions for a student-run conference

A while back I blogged about the NH Youth Earth Summit (NHYES) conference held last month on my campus. I’ve begun compiling my interview prep on my wiki and in the next couple of weeks I will be interviewing the students and faculty advisor behind this student-run conference.

I am interested in hearing any feedback from the edublogosphere regarding what questions they would ask if they were able to speak with these students. Whether it is about their experiences and gains from the event, whether it is about the logistics of the model or whether it is about how students feel about a more global event, I would like to hear from you.

Based on your feedback, I will include these questions in my interview which I intend to turn into a podcast available soon thereafter.

Please leave your questions in the comments below. I look forward to hearing what is important to you.

    Cheers!

PBwiki + YackPack = Voice enabled Wiki!

According to the folks at PBwiki, they will be holding a joint press conference with their colleagues at YackPack tomorrow, April 12th, to discuss the delivery of a widget intended to provide an audio component to the wiki experience. The techie/tech journalist press conference will be held at 2 PM Pacific, 5 PM EST, while educators and edubloggers will have their own press conference at 6 PM Pacific, 9 PM EST. The press conference will be held online at http://press.pbwiki.com employing the very technology being announced.

For those unfamiliar, PBwiki provides free basic wiki hosting while YackPack is known for their work on unified communications services.

What new doors will this alignment of resources provide to educators, particularly those who work asynchronously with learners in other areas of the globe? It is an exciting time to be sure and leaves me wondering, as always, what tomorrow will bring?

Kids Conference: NHYES – NH Youth Environmental Summit

    NHYES Logo

I can’t believe I had forgotten this “kids conference” when I posted on Vicki Davis’ article the other day. When I worked at Moultonborough Academy, one of our science teachers, Shaw Smith, was the faculty coordinator for the NH Youth Environmental Summit, an environmental leadership conference for middle-school students.

As it turns out, Plymouth State University hosts the one day NHYES conference in our science center, Boyd Hall! This year’s conference was an exceptional success as it sold out and they were in the unique position of having to turn away those who had hoped to register.

One of the unique things about this conference is that the presenters are all high-school students, with a couple of outstanding middle schoolers thrown in for good measure. The students are responsible for developing the conference from soup to nuts including registration, publicity and presentation.

I would love to compile a list of similar endeavors if folks would be willing to throw the URLs my way. If you already have them in your del.icio.us list, just add the tags for:edventures and kids-conference and I’ll create a page for those resources.

Perhaps such a list could serve to inspire others to reach out and engage students at a very visceral level!

    Online Connectivism Conference

This one is on my virtual calendar!

The Learning Technologies Centre at the University of Manitoba is hosting the Connectivism Online Conference. Thanks in large part to the efforts of George Siemens, this wholly online (oh and did I mention, FREE!) conference runs from 2-9 February 2007 and will feature the likes of Stephen Downes, Terry Anderson, Bill Kerr (link to presentation material) and Will Richardson as well as George Siemens himself.

This event will employ both Moodle and e-lluminate and will cover such areas as:

“…trends in K-12 sector, trends in higher education, research and net pedagogy, technological and societal trends, and connective knowledge and connectivism.”

I am looking forward to this event and hope that you will join me there!

Note: Bill Kerr’s link has been updated to reflect his new location and he kindly offered a link to his presentation material.

    K12 Online Conference

This had come across my radar a few weeks ago as it was being touted in a number of the blogs I follow. I mentioned this morning to our CIO Dwight Fischer about this free online conference which is designed for K-12 but obviously has an impact on higher ed, considering that we will be seeing the students affected by current technological events in our own schools very soon.

What really piqued my interest though was the keynote kickoff presented by David Warlick who is well known in his own right for his blog, 2-cents worth, as well as for his passionate and enaging perspectives on technology and education. If you don’t check out anything else, take a peek at his online keynote which he filmed in his own backyard, literally!

    The conference url is http://k12onlineconference.org

And to top things off, I was amazed to see that you can get graduate credit for attending, or rather participating, in this conference. Who offers this credit, none other than our very own Plymouth State University in conjunction with the Shanghai American School!

I’d write more but I need to watch the keynote again. It’s a bit lengthy and packed with so much info that I need to take a second look.

    Resolutions for 2006

So the New Year is typically the time for the setting of resolutions one hopes to maintain for the upcoming year. Well, I’ve not had much luck with these in the past but hey, New Year, new possibilities. So with this in mind here are my resolutions, which I will cross-post to my 43 things account in the hopes that I will have some external support in my endeavors.

    1. Give this blog the attention it deserves
There are a lot of exciting things on the EdTech horizon. That should make this one easy, right?

    2. Finish my M.Ed. in Educational Technology
With just the completion of my current course and my graduate practicum to go, I should be able to do this by my intended grad date of May.

    3. Start my Ed.D.
Am I too much of a glutton for punishment? Probably, but I am motivated by the successful dissertation defense by my friend and mentor, Royce Robertson. Congratulations Doctor Robertson!

    4. Present at an industry conference
I cut my teeth as a co-presenter at the 2005 ResNet Conference in Atlanta, GA last year. My goal is to be lead presenter at an EdTech conference this year, such as NERCOMP, EDUCAUSE, SIGUCCS, etc.

    5. Map out my career path
As a relatively young IT professional who has had a number of challenging jobs that have each provided me with invaluable experiences, I feel that it is about time I look toward my future and set goals for where I want to be and when. Particularly since the opportunity is now afforded me with the recent and upcoming organizational changes in my place of employ.

    6. Give back to the EdTech field
I hope to develop stronger ties to EdTech resources in my home state of New Hampshire. Plymouth State University is centrally and ideally located to serve the needs of our central and northern tier schools. As it’s motto is Et Prosim or “To Serve”, I would like to either develop a formal support program or provide support to an existing one.

    7. Develop and teach a graduate level course
For my grad practicum, I have proposed to develop a course that addresses recent developments in educational technology. Upon completion, I plan to submit it for consideration to our graduate studies department. I’ve come across a couple of blog posts that show me I’m not alone in this (see Ulises Mejias and Terry Anderson).

I like round numbers, so resolutions 8, 9 and 10 will be forthcoming.
